Our business energy experts have reviewed the SSE Business Energy Terms and Conditions and have summarised the important points here:
SSE offers a range of tailored business electricity and gas products, including fixed and flexible plans, with the option of 100% renewable energy to suit various business sizes and needs. SSE exclusively offers non-domestic services, having sold its domestic energy portfolio to Ovo Energy in 2020.
SSE sets your contract prices based on Direct Debit payment. You will be charged an additional 0.5p per kWh if you choose a different payment method or cancel your direct debit. However, if you choose not to pay by DD, you can pay online, via bank transfer, over the phone, or by post.
When your SSE business energy contract nears its end, SSE typically sends a renewal letter around 90 days before the contract expires. This letter will include a renewal offer for a new fixed plan. If you do not renew or switch to a new plan, you will automatically move onto their out-of-contract rates, which are considerably higher than a fixed plan. Use their out-of-contract rate page to find out more.
Credit checks are conducted to evaluate your business’s financial stability when applying for an SSE business energy contract. This process helps SSE determine the risk of non-payment and tailor contract terms accordingly. SSE reserves the right to deny a new contract based on an insufficient credit score.
Tools like SSE Clarity and SSE Foresight provide business energy monitoring analytics. SSE Clarity offers real-time monitoring and reporting on energy usage, enabling businesses to identify inefficiencies and improve business energy efficiency. SSE Foresight delivers predictive insights and recommendations based on specific energy patterns.
SSE offers smart meter installations that help businesses monitor and reduce their energy usage, contributing to cost savings and efficiency. According to the terms and conditions, if you do not have a smart meter, you agree to have one fitted unless you opt-out if your contract does not require it.

SSE is leading efforts to decarbonise the grid. In this section, we’ll outline some of its key investments in renewable power generation.
SSE operates 2.5 GW of onshore wind capacity and 1 GW of offshore wind capacity across the UK. Notable projects include Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm and Stronelairg Wind Farm.
SSE manages 1.15 GW of hydroelectric capacity, including significant sites like Glendoe and Sloy Hydroelectric Power Stations.
SSE is expanding its solar capacity and planning to develop 500 MW by 2030. It is focusing on efficiency and integration with other renewable sources.
SSE stands out from other business energy suppliers due to its unique roles and strong focus on infrastructure management and renewable energy. Here are the key aspects that differentiate SSE:
Multiple Roles:
Unlike many energy companies, SSE is an energy generator, a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and a business energy supplier, managing electricity distribution networks in Northern Scotland and Central Southern England.
Renewable Energy Focus:
SSE is the UK’s largest renewable energy generator, with significant investments in wind farms, hydropower plants, and solar energy projects. This emphasis on sustainability sets them apart.
Expert Energy Auditors:
SSE employs a nationwide business energy audit team that assists businesses in identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency. This team can provide ESOS assessments, a necessary compliance procedure for large business energy customers.
